  • Persistent sad, anxious, or "empty" mood
  • Feelings of hopelessness and pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities that you once enjoyed, including sex
  • Decreased energy, fatigue, being "slowed down"
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
  • Insomnia, early-morning awakening, or over-sleeping
  • Appetite and/or weight changes
  • Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts
  • Restlessness, irritability



Use this list of symptoms as a guide to help you understand depression. Don't use it to diagnose yourself. If you have some of these symptoms, don't focus on how many symptoms you have. Instead, talk to someone - your doctor, family member, minister, friend - about how you have been feeling, to see if he/she can help.
