Getting over anger is an essential part of anger management.

It is no good to just make sense of what is making you angry and then sit with feelings of anger. You need to learn how to control anger and then feel fine with what you have decided to do.

Uncontrolled Anger is Destructive

Irritation, anger and hostiltiy generated and aimed at others harms the very person we least expect it to - ourselves! The noradrenaline released in situations of anger can be a killer!...

So the message is do not get angry in the first place, modify your beliefs and behaviour so that getting over anger is more important than getting even!

The true cause of negative feelings such as anger, is a matter of opinion...

Freud says they are as a result of repressed feelings that date back to chilhood. Others say that anger is a result of chemical imbalances in the brain. To cognitive therapists they represent distorted thinking or emotional traps.

Whichever way you look at it, it is essential to find a way of getting over anger to find peace and stress relief.

Here are some simple suggestions for getting over anger...

Physical things that you can do:

  • Exercise
    Anything from walking to running, riding a bike or motorcycle, swimming, or working out at a gym is great for getting over anger. Yoga is my favourite – focuses my mind and strengthens my body.

  • Call a friend
    Talking to a friend can really help. Make sure you can trust your friend to give positive feedback, and not just agree with you.

  • Relaxation
    You can relax in a number of ways... You can meditate or pray or do both. They will both help you to relax and focus on positive things. This mindful awareness meditation for anger is a great way to release feelings of resentment and anger. Fill your bathtub with hot water and your favourite relaxation essential oil and sit quietly for as long as you need to. Add a glass of wine, candles, and soft music, and you will feel your anger and resentment fade away. Using your breath is an effective way of getting over anger.

  • Write down your feelings
    It can be really therapeutic to write down your feelings. And then throw the paper away along with your anger and resentment.

  • Get help
    If you feel that getting over anger is too difficult for you to do alone, then contact a therapist or get an anger management work book that can help you understand your feelings and give you a plan of action for dealing with them. Clever people get help. They don’t battle on alone.

Mental things that you can do:

  • Practice gratitude
    Make a list of things you are grateful for. Write them down or just keep them in your head. Think of positive things that have happened to you recently, like another car letting you in when traffic was heavy, a favour someone did, or a stranger that smiled at you. It is difficult to remain angry when you are feeling grateful. If you need some convincing, this is a good read about how gratitude can make you happier!

  • Forgive
    This is a big one! And not always easy to do. Try to see a situation from another’s viewpoint. Everyone makes mistakes, gets frustrated, or gets distracted. Trying to think of why someone is rude or mad can really help you not resent them or get angry. Some reasons for bad behaviour could be: a loved one is ill, they had a big fight with their spouse, they just got fired, they are very sad about a loss, or they are just not thinking clearly. Forgive others and don’t forget to forgive yourself, too.

  • Develop a Positive Attitude
    There is always something to feel positive about. Make a big effort to have a positive attitude and reap the rewards. Smile at people, compliment them, do a favour for them; all these things will add to your positive attitude. This positive attitude is a big part of getting over anger.   • Turn negatives into positives
    You can learn something from every bad thing that happens to you, even if it is not to do that again or put yourself into that situation. The way you view a situation influences the way it makes you feel. Looking at bad situations from an educational standpoint can help the feelings of anger and resentment not even begin.
