- Some foods, such as garlic, onions, cheeses, oily meats and anchovies, can cause bad breath. Alcoholic drinks, such as beer, wine and whiskey, can cause problems with your breath.
- Some medical conditions such as postnasal drip from sinusitis, kidney failure or liver disease, can cause smelly breath. An ulcer can give you bad breath, as can chronic indigestion. Check with your doctor if you have bad breath for more than a few days.

Home Remedies For Bad Breath
- Brush your tongue. Brushing your tongue is probably the best home remedy for bad breath. Studies have shown that brushing the tongue alone is a better guard against bad breath than brushing only the teeth.
- Avoid the use of commercial mouthwashes: instead rinse your mouth with a few drops of peppermint oil mixed in a glass of water.
- Brush your teeth carefully twice a day.
- Floss your teeth once a day, preferably before brushing. Flossing liberates bits of food and gunk that could cause odour.
- Change your toothbrush every two months. Not only does a new toothbrush clean more effectively, it also gets rid of any build up of bacteria that may be living on your old brush.
- Clean your dentures carefully and regularly. Like natural teeth, they trap food and bacteria that cause smelly breath.
- If you can't brush after every meal, rinse your mouth with water and spit it out along with the bits of leftover food.
- Snack on celery, carrots and apples. These foods all help fight the development of plaque on the teeth. Cleaner teeth mean fresher breath!
- Visit your dentist twice a year for a thorough cleaning and examination to eliminate cavities and any gum disease that could cause bad breath.
- Eliminate offending food from your diet. These include onions, garlic, hot peppers, anchovies, some cheeses, spicy meat like salami, and some drinks like coffee, wine, whiskey and beer.
