My Gardenby Margo
My garden has to be on my top 10 list of best places for stress relief and relaxation!... What about you?
When I think of a beautiful garden, I think of manicured lawns and flower beds dripping with colour and perfect green leaves – no black spots on the roses, no worm’s tooth-marks on the lily leaves, weed-free beds, no snail trails on the nasturtiums! Alas, my garden is full of the above! But I LOVE it! And all I need to do to get to it, is to step out of my back door! Instant stress relief (except when the neighbour’s cat is chasing my birds, but that is another loooong story.)
I feel as if I know, personally, all the creatures that live in my garden. The pigeons come to eat in the morning and enjoy a splash in the water bowl. I love the pigeons! I love their ability to make their home in dusty, grimy cities and still strut around as if life is good. Some of my same pigeon friends have been visiting my garden for more than three years. Even my dogs sit happily in the sun alongside the birds...

The doves wait their turn and flock down to have a peck and then spread their soft grey under-wings to the sun. I am softened and stilled by their presence... The noisy weavers dominate the bird feeders and keep me entertained by their chatter. Elegant sunbirds jostle for a place on the juice bottle and the males' magnificent collars are an art display second to none.
My garden is a play ground for little lizards... up and down the tree branches, in and out of the flower pots, catching ants and chasing each other... Great fun to watch. And the classic, silvery-white geckos that come out at night make me feel as if my home is being looked after and over... Snails are welcome! Their perfect shells and gentle but careful ‘feelers’ leave me in awe of their design. Slugs leave silvery trails for me to find in the morning. Oh, the friends that I have in my garden...
And that is not all...
I can do what I like in my garden... Paint a wall bright pink because I feel like some ’pink’ in my life... Leave the grapes on the vine for the starlings to eat...Plant any plants anywhere, even if it isn’t really the right place for them...Stick old plates on the wall because I like the look... Walk around in my pyjamas until midday...Sit and talk inspiring nonsense to my dogs (and my sisters or my daughter when they visit). For a double treat, I set the mood with some music especially put together for gardening... Joy of Gardening - really relaxing! And I think my dogs enjoy it as well!
