Reducing Eye Strain

Reducing eye strain is one of the important ways to manage stress.

Sometimes you may not be aware that you are suffering from eye strain, so make reducing eye strain a part of your daily habits and feel the difference.

Here are two exercises for the eye. They are very simple to do and come from the tradition of yoga.

They are particularly recommended if you spend a lot of time in front of a computer.

They are relaxing to do at anytime, particularly in the evening. Or just grab a few minutes during your day...

Each exercise takes 10 minutes: you can do them one at a time or one after another. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, remove them before you start.

Reducing Eye Strain Exercise 1

  • Sit in a comfortable chair and relax. Close your eyes for a moment and take a few gentle, even breaths.
  • Now open your eyes and, keeping your head perfectly still, look up for as far as you can for 5 seconds. Don't strain. Just feel the movement.
  • Now do the same thing looking down.
  • Now look straight to the right without turning your head, then to the left, each time for 5 seconds.
  • Close your eyes again and relax for a minute. Now open them and look up in a right diagonal direction for 5 seconds, then up in a left diagonal direction.
  • Next, look down in a right diagonal direction. Close your eyes for a minute and rest.
  • Finally, open your eyes again, and starting with straight up, move your eyes around all the positions in a circular direction, for 2 seconds in each position, first to the right - right up diagonal, straight right, right down diagonal, straight down, left down diagonal, straight left, left up diagonal, and back to the beginning.
  • Then do the same thing to the left, in a circular direction.
  • Now rest and relax.

Reducing Eye Strain Exercise 2

For this exercise you need to light a candle, place it on a table in front of you, and dim any surrounding light.

The gentle warm yellow tones are soothing, with no glare. Sit comfortably and just focus your attention on the candle flame.

Watch it carefully, notice how many colours it contains. Tinges of blue, red and green. See the glow the glow that surrounds the flame itself.

This is a kind of meditation, which quickly calms the mind and helps you to slow down and relax at the end of a long day.
