Stress And Diet

Sunday 14 June, 2020.

How do stress and diet affect you! Can your diet affect how you manage stress?

‘You are what you eat’ is one of those irritating sayings that just happens to be true…

Stuff yourself with junk food or drink too much alcohol and you will feel tired, bloated and sluggish. Eat a well-balanced diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit and you will feel much more alert and full of increased vitality – just what you need to cope with stress.

Here are some basic facts for you to consider when thinking about your stress and diet. You may not need to make radical changes to your diet but consider what you eat and the effect it has on your well-being. Make some small changes and feel the difference!

A Balanced Diet

Eating the right balance of food can make a big difference to your energy levels. Your body needs a diet that consists of about 50% carbohydrates, 30% fat, 15% protein and plenty of fibre, vitamins and minerals and water.

    • Carbohydrates

These provide the body’s basic source of energy. Simple carbohydrates, such as sugars, give instant energy but have no nutritional value. Complex carbohydrates found in brown bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, cereals and pulses, are much better for you because they are slow-releasing – an important fact when considering stress and diet.

    • Fats

Fats are essential for growth and healthy digestion, but too much fat can make you overweight and cause serious health problems. And we all know too well that how we feel determines how well we cope with stress.

    • Protein

The body needs a daily supply of protein for cell growth, mantenance and repair. Most Westerners get much more protein than they need, which usually becomes converted into fat.

    • Fibre

Fibre found in nuts, pulses, rice, cereals and wholegrains, prevents constipation, lowers blood cholesterol and helps protect against bowel disorders and diseases.

    • Vitamins and Minerals

These are essential for maintaining good health. Although you only need vitamins and minerals in small amounts you must include them in a discussion about stress and diet.
