Apart from differing degrees of severity there are also different types of depression.

2 Main Types of Depression

  1. Unipolar depression where you feel down all the time.
  2. Bipolar disorder or manic-depressive illness where you experience periods of depression alternating with bursts of elation.

Bipolar disorder is further divided into several types of bipolar disease. And each type has different bipolar depression symptoms.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

    • Bipolar I disorder.
This is known as the most severe type of bipolar. It is the classic manic depressive disorder. The people that experience this type will have full blown episodes of mania and depression. Mood swings with bipolar I cause significant difficulty in your job, school or relationships. Manic episodes can be severe and dangerous.
    • Bipolar II disorder.
Bipolar II is less severe than bipolar I. You will still have periods of depression but the mania symptoms are not as severe. You may have an elevated mood, irritability and some changes in your functioning, but generally you can carry on with your normal daily routine. Instead of full-blown mania, you have hypomania — a less severe form of mania. In bipolar II, periods of depression usually last longer than periods of hypomania. The bipolar symptoms are similar to mania but there will be no delusions and hallucinations that occur with full blown mania.
    • Cyclothymia.
Cyclothymia is a mild form of bipolar disorder. If you suffer from this type, you will experience definite mood swings but not the full blown mania or depression.
