What Is Mindfulness?

Sunday 10 July, 2016.

What Is Mindfulness? And how does the practice of mindful meditation gives you the edge on stress management?

Mindfulness is a practice taken largely from Buddhism but anyone, with any belief system, can enjoy the benefits of mindfulness.

Mindfulness is the practice of becoming more aware of the present moment, rather than dwelling in the past or projecting into the future.

It generally involves a heightened awareness of sensory stimuli (really noticing your breathing, feeling the sensations of your body, etc.) and being “in the now.”

What is mindfulness?

It means seeing things as they are, without trying to change them.

The aim is to try and change your reactions to some of the emotions or thoughts that you experience, while being careful not to reject the emotion itself. Cognitive therapy uses the principles of mindfulness.

Being mindful requires that you become aware of physical sensations, thoughts and emotions as they present in the moment.

Furthermore, the mindful individual is aware but does not get involved or attached. Sensations, emotions and thoughts are viewed and examined in detail, from a third party point of view, with no attempt being made to deny or block them, or distract from them. This allows you to become more familar with all this mental activity, appreciating how it arises and if left alone, passes.

This is very useful when dealing with difficult emotions like fear, anger, envy and with desire…

Mindfulness is non-judgmental, so observe your emotions and thoughts impassively- if a particular negative thought or emotion such as anger or envy appears it is not judged but simply observed…

Remember, acceptance does not mean passivity. The goal is a calm but increased awareness of the current situation.

We will all have disturbing or upsetting thoughts and emotions from time to time – after all, we are human…

But mindfulness can help you change how you relate to, or perceive your emotions…

Instead of seeing disturbing emotions as a distraction, you can actually bring them to your attention and, in a way, change them from being enemies to being friends and learn valuable lessons from them…

This does not mean that they will go away, but it can change your perception of them.

In the beginning, it is a difficult practice to make a habit, but it can be done.

What is mindfulness
 to me?…

It is the gift of being able to give my focus to the moment that I am in – right now…

Not panic or stress about what has gone…

Not fear the future…

Living mindfully means being aware of what is around me; what I am feeling – the warmth of the sun, the water on my hands, the touch of my dogs’ fur, the voice of my friend, the brush of the breeze, the song of the birds, the angle of the sun rays, the sound of the traffic, the smell of the grass…

And I could go on and on…

This is my basic mindfulness meditation…

Being in a state of mindfulness makes me more able to pay attention to my emotions and reactions, and learn from them…

Living mindfully, paying attention to what is happening now, keeps my stress response in check and helps me to stay calm and focused…
